They were the greatest heroes of the American Coast, routinely risking their lives in grand maritime rescues. Their work was respected and honored by Americans most prestigious leaders, celebrated by the popular publications of their time. Poet Walt Whitman wrote of them and the artist Winslow Homer painted them. The Life Saving Service answered the most basic of human questions, "Who will help in our hour of greatest need?"
